Early SettlementsThe earliest to settle in New York was the Dutch. When New York became a colony, the Dutch were overthrown by the British. The British developed the region based on economy. All the British wanted was money. Two major permanent settlement were settled by Peter Minuit. These settlements were known as Fort Orange (Albany) and Kingston. Conflict started as early as purchasing Fort Amsterdam (Manhattan) from the Natives. Peter Minuit bought Fort Amsterdam for 60 trinkets and beads. That is equivalent to $24 USD.
